Relational Psychotherapy:
A Course for Clinicians & Psychology Students

This course will provide an overview of relational psychotherapy. The term “relational psychotherapy” refers to a range of theories characterized by the ideas that psychotherapy therapy is bi-directional, in the sense that therapist and client mutually affect each other, and the therapeutic field is co-constituted by the interacting subjectivities of both participants.
In the relational model, we see how people continue to enact relational configurations formed in childhood and elaborated over time. Both therapist and patient enact and gradually become aware of previously implicit internalized relational patterns, which may have been repressed. The helpful factor in therapy is the experience of a new relational configuration. Putting the situation into words, or the classical notion of insight, is not as important as the lived experience of a new relationship, which is the most important factor in psychotherapy. The frame, interpretations, etc., all play a part, but the therapeutic relationship is the most critical.

Dr. Lionel Corbett
Dr. Lionel Corbett trained in medicine and psychiatry in England and as a Jungian Analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Dr. Corbett is a professor of depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California, where he teaches depth psychology.
He is the author of numerous professional papers and seven books: Psyche and the Sacred; The Religious Function of the Psyche; The Sacred Cauldron: Psychotherapy as a spiritual practice; The Soul in Anguish: Psychotherapeutic Approaches to Suffering, and Understanding Evil: A Guide for Psychotherapists; The God-image: From Antiquity to Jung; and his latest A Jungian and Psychoanalytic Approach to Biblical Myth and Religion.
