ANALYSIS AND EVOLUTIONARY ASTROLOGY:
A ROCKY, FRUITFUL MARRIAGE?
with Steven Forrest
“One may expect with a fair degree of
probability that a given well-defined
psychological situation will be accompanied
by an analogous astrological configuration.
Astrology, like the collective unconscious
with which psychology is concerned,
consists of symbolic configurations:
the“planets” are the gods,
symbols of the powers of the unconscious.”
– CG Jung to the French astrologer,
André Barbault, May 1954
Can psychoanalysis and evolutionary astrology complement each other? Is a marriage between them possible? Jung himself seems to have been open to the idea, but it never came to fruition. I’ve been active as an astrologer all my life as well as being an enthusiastic Jungian “fan boy.” I simply could not do my work without his work. Still, in this talk, I will resist the easy temptation to blow the trumpets for a brave new world in which psychoanalysis and astrology march hand-in-hand into the future. Their synthesis is not that easy. But I do believe it is possible.
Let me start with a definition. Evolutionary astrology is exactly what the term implies: a form of astrology that assumes change and growth in the psyche over time. We are miles from pop astrology and its twelve little “personality” boxes.
What the issue boils down to is that astrology is an oracle, and psychoanalysis is a conversation. Even though their aims are fundamentally identical, there is an archetypal friction between them. While an oracle can inspire and inform an analysand, it can also silence him or her. While it can serve the analyst like an X-ray serves a surgeon, it can also potentially blunt the analyst’s experience of serendipitous discovery.
Still, one day the two systems might yet learn to dance . . .

STEVEN FORREST
Gazing through astronomical telescopes in his early teens led Steven to begin exploring astrology. He received a B.A. in Religion in 1971 from the University of North Carolina in the USA and shortly thereafter began to establish his astrological practice.
In 1984, Bantam Books published his first book, The Inner Sky. In the years that followed, he authored or co-authored another sixteen books, all of which have become foundational texts for the movement called evolutionary astrology – a form of astrology which integrates free will, grounded humanistic psychology and ancient metaphysics. In 2019, he published the first volume of his monumental work on the four astrological Elements: The Book of Fire, The Book of Earth, The Book of Air and The Book of Water.
Currently, Steven and his team run the Forrest Center for Evolutionary Astrology, which is an online portal for learning his style of astrology.
