Performance Without Fear:

Art as a Doorway to the Transcendent and Creativity as a Path towards Individuation

We all “perform” in life. Whether we are preparing for a concert, a thesis defense, a big meeting, a public talk or even an encounter with a difficult member of our family: we step on stage.

Drawing on the psychology of performance and the creative process, this four-part seminar series will explore what it means to perform authentically, viewing the stage not as a place of judgment but as an opportunity for engagement, vulnerability and self-expression.

The seminars will first explore fear – its physical and mental signatures, the way judgment (external and internal) narrows attention, and how complexes manifest in comparisons, perfectionism, and labelling, which distort our sense of self. We will see how product-over-process thinking fuels over striving, procrastination, and creative blocks, turning joy into shame or self-sabotage. By mapping these interferences —audience projection, idealized futures, collective standards, and the “addiction to perfection”—we will gain a precise language for understanding performance anxiety and creative blocks.

From there the series will focus on recovery: cultivating non-judgmental awareness, learning to witness rather than identify with the thoughts and emotions of our complexes and remaining within the protected space of creativity where play, experimentation and discovery can emerge. Through patience, surrender and a renewed relationship with time we can indeed learn to relinquish excessive control, reconnect with our art and creativity and expand beyond the limitations of a fixed persona.

Offered once a week over four consecutive weeks, each session combines a presentation of key concepts from the psychology of performance with experiential exercises in relaxation, breathing, and body awareness. Time is also devoted to self-reflection and group discussion, allowing participants to integrate their learning and apply it to performances, presentations, professional challenges, and everyday life.

Elisabeth Pomès- IAAP

Elisabeth first realized her love for psychology and psychotherapy when she started working with artists. Starting her career as a singer and later a voice teacher, she came in contact with artists who experienced debilitating stage fright and at times were blocked in their creativity. She started developing Performance Without Fear, a course in which she used her background in Yoga, Qigong, Meditation and Psychotherapy to help artists release tension both physically and psychologically.

At the same time, she discovered the works and psychology of Carl Jung and began her training in Analytical Psychology at the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts. She graduated in 2009.

Elisabeth’s focus is to assist someone in their unique Individuation Process. She believes that there is a potential for wholeness in each human being, an urge towards freedom, completeness and self-realization similar to that of a blade of grass, which manages to find its way to the sunlight even through rock and rubble. That is what gives life hope and meaning.

Elisabeth is a member of the International Association of Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts (OAJA).
