50 Years of Pacifica

Fifty years ago, Stephen Aizenstat began a community experiment in depth psychological scholarship set along the Pacific coastline. With the peace that Pacific refers to in mind, he set out to offer a new place for the story of Jung’s psychology to grow and thrive. In those decades, Pacifica hosted the luminaries of our tradition including Joseph Campbell, James Hillman, Marion Woodman and numerous others. Today OPUS hosts their archives, allowing new scholars to find inspiration in their work. Perhaps most importantly, Pacifica’s campuses have been a temenos – a place where people made contact with something greater than themselves. The tens of thousands of hours of personal and interpersonal processing, discovery and soul work and dream work done on the land there have made it not only an educational institution but a church for meaning.

We look forward to reflecting with Dr. Aizenstat on the tremendous history of Pacifica, its luminaries and scholars and his hope for its bright future ahead.

AUTHOR & FOUNDING PRESIDENT,
PACIFICA GRADUATE INSTITUTE

Stephen Aizenstat, Ph.D., has devoted his life to understanding the profound wisdom and healing power that exists within each of us. He is the creator and founding president of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California. He has explored the power of dreams through depth psychology and his own research for more than 35 years. His methodologies extend from traditional dream work and a vision of an animated world where the living image is experienced as embodied and as originating in the psyche of Nature and persons.

His book, Dream Tending, describes new applications of dreamwork in relation to health and healing, the creative process, relationships, nightmares and the World's Dream. He speaks and leads workshops around the world. He has served as an organizational consultant to leading companies and as a content advisor to Hollywood film makers. He has spoken at the United Nations and is honoured to be affiliated with its Earth Charter International project.
